RARA AVIS is a new way to save rain forest, as well as learn about it, while you experience the richness and splendor of the most diverse environment on earth. Rara Avis was developed to show that they can make rain forest economically productive and so save it from destruction. In Rara Avis, you will be in a remote virgin jungle — true wilderness — bordering Braulio Carrillo National Park and the Zona Protectora La Selva. At 700 meters (2000 ft) above sea level, the climate stays cool and comfortable year-round (77degrees F or 25 degrees C). There is a lot of rain (it’s a rain forest!), but mosquitoes are not a problem.

Over 340 species of birds have been found at Rara Avis, including sunbitterns, umbrella-birds, great green macaws, parrots, and toucans. There is a good chance to see monkeys, anteaters, or coatimundis if you walk silently through the forest, or to spot the tracks of tapirs and jungle cats. The treetops are festooned with vines, lianas, bromeliads, and orchids, and there are more kinds of plants, birds, and butterflies than in all of Europe.

Your trip begins in the small town of Las Horquetas de Sarapiquí, accessible by bus, car, taxi, or small plane. There you can buy your last supplies (boots, hats, rain gear, flashlights, etc.) before you board a tractor-pulled cart, for the four-hour, 15-kilometer voyage. First you cross two rivers, riding through if the water is low or crossing a swinging foot-bridge when they’ve risen with the rains. Rara Avis has remained pristine because of its inaccessibility: along the way you will see firsthand how rain forests have been cut down wherever they are near roads.

Soon you will arrive at El Plástico, the more rustic of the two lodges, named for an abandoned jungle prison colony where the prisoners slept under plastic tarps. The hotel offers basic lodging (bunk beds and shared bathrooms) in the administrative headquarters of the penal colony. There is a classroom for student groups and a spectacular view of the lowlands.

For those who want a little more comfort, the Waterfall Lodge lies another three kilometers through the forest at the end of a rough corduroy road. Many people choose to walk through the rain forest while their bags are delivered on the tractor cart. The Waterfall Lodge lies 200 meters from the spectacular double waterfall. Each room has its own bathroom (with bathtubs and hot water) and wrap-around balcony overlooking the rain forest and the lowlands. You can watch birds right from the balcony.

Once you are at Rara Avis, your naturalist guide will take you into the rain forest and show you the plants and wildlife and explain their complex relations. Later, you may be able to swim in large crystalline pools at the base of the waterfall. You will need rubber boots and clothes in which to get wet and muddy.

RARA AVIS offers clean and comfortable lodging, deep in the heart of the jungle, with home-style Costa Rican meals, plus an adventurous learning experience different from ordinary tourism. At the same time, you will be encouraging the wise use of the rain forest — the reason for the existence of Rara Avis.

Because of the difficult access, they strongly recommend a minimum stay of two nights. The tractor leaves Las Horquetas every morning at 9:00 AM, arriving for lunch if all goes well. Departure from Rara Avis is at 2:00 PM, arriving in Horquetas at about 6:00 PM.

Ciudad Perdida Ecolodge began as a graduation project of one of the Mora-Streber family. An Ecolodge Design Proposal for the culmination of the University of Costa Rica´s ecotourism course.

The property focuses on the Caribbean architecture, using an English-Victorian style, typical of the Caribbean. All wood used is harvested wood from plantations, assuring that the construction does not contribute to the indiscriminate destruction of the native forest.

The houses, with a Victorian English design, represent the original Caribbean architecture and they are equipped to make your stay a pleasant and comfortable experience!.

The two bungalows each measure 64 m2 (214 sq. feet), consisting of two rooms each with two double beds, private bathrooms with hot water, AC, ceiling fan, refrigerator, security box, a clothing cabinet, lamp and night tables, coffeemaker, garden chairs, private parking space, private garden, terrace, and hammocks.

The Tree House Lodge is located in Punta Uva, within the Gandoca-Manzanillo Wildlife Refuge, on the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica. The Lodge is surrounded by many natural and cultural beauties, making it the perfect place to enjoy, relax and experience this very different and special area of Costa Rica.

The complex is located on a 10 acre ocean front property in the famous Punta Uva beach, just south of the laid back town of Puerto Viejo. Total privacy, a natural and tranquil atmosphere, and full relaxation are the key elements you will find at the Tree House Lodge. With your own beach access to a 300 meter beach front, you won’t have to see anybody else during your stay at this romantic hideaway.

The Tree House has two rooms for up to 6 guests. The upstairs room has a private bathroom and a twin bed. The downstairs room is provided with a twin bed and a bunk bed. Selva Bananito Lodge, which opened its doors in December of 1995, is a secluded rain forest lodge situated 20 km south and 15 km inland of Puerto Limón on the Atlantic side of Costa Rica. It is owned and operated by the Stein family, who moved to Costa Rica from South America 24 years ago.

For the seasoned and new traveler alike, the lodge provides first-rate comfort while trying to limit human impact on the environment. Seven spacious cabins are constructed of beautiful, salvaged wood and stand at least 10 meters from one another. Arenal Volcano Inn is a new hotel located 6.5 kilometer north of the Catholic Church in the town of La Fortuna. The hotel has 15 rooms all with excellent views of the Arenal Volcano.

Arenal Observatory Lodge $$

Set high on a ridge facing Costa Rica’s most active and spectacular volcano, the Arenal Observatory Lodge offers the adventurous traveler a unique, once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Arenal Observatory Lodge is situated on a ridge 120 meters above Lake Arenal. The ridge rises between the Agua Caliente and Quebrada Danta rivers. This topographical feature is important, so as any possible lava flow will not affect the Lodge. The lodge is within ZONE “D” Low Danger Area, near the volcano. Moreover, as prevailing winds are from the East, the lodge would seldom be affected by ash or other fallout from a major eruption, as the lodge is located to the southeast of the volcano.

After having lain dormant for over 400 years, Arenal Volcano erupted violently on July 29, 1968, wreaking havoc with the local population and creating a ‘lava landscape’ for miles around its base.

The Volcano Lodge is located in La Palma de la Fortuna, San Carlos, on the side of the road that connects La Fortuna de San Carlos with the Arenal Lake, with direct view of the Arenal Volcano and the tropical rainforest.

From San José – Less Trafic Route

Take the road that goes to Puntarenas and make a right in San Ramón, go through the town from east to west until the hospital, there will be a sign of Villa Blanca and Bajo Rodríguez. Keep going on that road passing by La Tigra, Chachagua to La Fortuna, then, turn to the left from east to west on the direction to the Arenal Volcano, keep driving for 2 km and then you will find our entrance at the left side of the road, then, drive 1.5 km into our farm.

Because Monteverde is green all year with an average daytime temperature of a cool 18 C (64 F) and offers so many great mountain views, it is considered a paradise for horseback riding in Costa Rica.

While it is not permitted to ride in the Reserves themselves, we are pleased to offer the chance to ride in a 139 hectares family’s farms (343 acres) and enjoy exclusive quiet trails, bird watching, sugar cane and coffee plantations, secondary and primary forest, open fields (great for a run), and amazing views of mountains, canyons and the Gulf of Nicoya (Pacific side, where the sun sets).

Today the farm is used exclusively for horseback riding, grazing and producing king grass, sugar cane and cereal for the horses.

The remaining forests are preserved and the owners started a reforestation program to reinforce the biological corridors of this perfect environment for often seen and numerous toucans, parrots, bellbirds, toucanets, motmots, and dozens of other species.
